A People's History of America / by Howard Zinn:

You can read Howard Zinn’s seminal A People’s History of America online, for free, in its entirety here. This book isn’t the conventional history of America taught in the public school system.

Reading it again, I’ve found that portions of it have deepened my understanding of the Occupy protests in the context of dissent and class struggle going back to colonial America. In the book Zinn quotes a a 1770’s letter to the editor of The New York Gazette: “Is it equitable that 99, rather 999, should suffer for the Extravagance or Grandeur of one, especially when it is considered that men frequently owe their Wealth to the impoverishment of their Neighbors?” Sound familiar?

What Egypt learned from the students who overthrew Milosevic-

The students who organized the OTPOR (RESISTANCE) movement that overthrew Milosevic, after marching for 100 days without success, decided that they needed to rethink revolution. Instead of the political parties’ gravity and bombast, Otpor adopted the sensibility of a TV show its leaders had grown up watching: Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Its daily work consisted of street theater and pranks that made the government look silly and won coverage from opposition media. WIt was perhaps not always achieved, but it was the aim.

Since the overthrow of Milosevic, OTPOR leaders have developed a group based in Belgrade for activists to study and implement their tactics. The group is called Canvas: Center for Applied NonViolent Action and Strategies.
